Los Lagos, Chile has to be one of the most beautiful areas I've ever visited. Right now Puerto Montt is home base and we take little day trips to surrounding locations. I've learned that there's a bus heading to almost every destination in this area so there really isn't a need for any tour guides. Unfortunately we've learned this after using the tour guides. You live and you learn. The bus drivers here seem to have found a mega mix track of all these songs that have the same time signature and they mix these songs in with the same drumbeat. I loved it the track after the first listen... but it lost it's lustre after the 50th play.

Santiago, Chile Week 1

Some of you may or may not know already, but I'm in Santiago, Chile visiting my mom who's serving an LDS mission. During our Christmas phone call my mom asked me if I could come visit her down here, and without hesitation I said "YES!!!". (ok there was some hesitation, but that was only to check my bank account).Any how I got here last January 26th and this was the first photo I took...
A lot of you don't know my mom's story, nor will I get into any of the details but know that she's amazing. Jacob and Melanie Barlow 10.29.2011

I shot Jacob and Melanie's wedding 2 weeks ago and it was amazing. When Jacob and Melanie told me that Jacob has a million people in his family (no exaggeration), I preemptively got a headache thinking of all the bossing around I would have to do... But both families were great to work with. Everyone was very nice and took direction very well, despite myself being horrible at giving directions. That day I shot with my Nikon D7000, D200, and my Minolta Maxxum 5. I've edited some of the photos I took with my digital camera and posted a few on Facebook, but the shots you see below are from my film camera. The only thing I altered on the photo is the exposure (making the picture brighter) and the photos look great.Hope you enjoy them!!!

St. Vincent came around last week in support of her 3rd studio album, and one of my favorite releases of 2011, "Strange Mercy". Those around me know how big of a crush I have on Annie Clark aka St. Vincent so I was very excited to get approved (last minute) to shoot the show. The night was amazing and I was pleased with the photos I got.

WU LYF at The Echo 07.26.2011

This post is WAY WAY late... but that's okay.
As I was making some more room on my hard drive I came across these shots I took of WU LYF back in July. This show was definitely one of my favorite shows of 2011. Just picture The Echo in Echo Park jam packed, sweaty bodies dancing around, and a massive smile on my face intermittently covered by my camera each time I took a shot.

WU LYF's album is "Go Tell Fire to the Mountain" is one of my favorite releases of 2011 and really excited to see them in November at The Troubadour and I highly recommend checking them out if they come to a venue near you.

YACHT at The Echo Plex!

YACHT, comprised of Jonah Bechtolt and Claire Evans, performed at The Echo Plex last Friday night as part of the Filter Magazine's Culture Collide Festival. They went on shortly after midnight, but you couldn't tell by how energized the crowd was as YACHT ripped through a 45 minute set. It was really fun to see YACHT evolve from just Jona and his laptop to a full band featuring Claire and great video visuals projected in the background. One thing didn't change... and that's Jona's energy. Make sure to check out YACHT if they ever come around... you will not be disappointed.

Dum Dum Girls at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa

In my opinion there aren't enough girl groups out there that rock like Dum Dum Girls.
These gals dressed all in black, took the stage, and rocked a good 45 minute set.As always with the small club shows the lighting was a little iffy, but I think i did alright... Tell me what you think!

BQH Headshots

A couple weeks ago my friend Brighton asked me to shoot some head shots for her upcoming acting auditions and today we finally got them done. We went down to the Arts District in DTLA and found some cool spots to shoot. You can't really tell, but the photos where Brighton is wearing a mustard colored shirt is the same location where they shot scenes from the movie Drive with that Ryan Gosling character... not sure if you know who he is.
ANYWAY...

311 in Santa Barbara County Bowl

311 in Santa Barbara County Bowl was amazing... I've had so many great memories at the county bowl that all include 311.
One memory that's fresh in my mind took place on 05/26/2000 and the Los Angeles Lakers were playing game 3 of the Western Conference Championship series against the Portland Trailblazers. I remember the anxiety not being able to do both things. Anyhow, during the show Nick Hexum announced that the Lakers had beaten the Trailblazers 93-91 and the whole place erupted. I was jumping up and down and my friend Derek and I were about to embrace when he accidentally knocked my glasses off and they broke upon hitting the ground. I picked them up and watch the show holding my broken glasses on my face.

That was an awesome night in more ways than one... and last Sunday was no different.

The 311 weekend continued on Saturday in Irvine as the boys came out and played a killer killer show. It was like a volleyball match... Last weekend I flew up to San Francisco to shoot a ton of cool bands who's energy was amazing and palpable... and it was amazing. Last night that same amazing energy came from two bands Sublime with Rome and 311. Unfortunately the traffic getting to San Diego was so bad that I missed the first 3 songs to shoot Sublime with Rome. No worries there... i'm shooting them tonight and tomorrow night as well. I did however shoot 311. And if you've never seen 311 before, they're like a musical defibrillator. They make you come alive with their music and last night was no exception. Check out my photos from last night's show below!

Here's another batch of photos I just developed. The inspiration to shoot film came from this blog post from one of my favorite photographers, Jessica Peterson. To say she's one of my favorite is an understatement. She's obviously has an eye for photography, but I love the small creative projects she does. Check out her blog to see what she's up to!

I think I've already expressed how much I love film and how much warmer it is than digital prints but my pal Claire said it the best in a comment on my last post about film. She said, "There is something so magical about shooting with film. That sounds so cheesy, so over-done. But it's true. There's so much life there... the waiting to see what turns out from your efforts. It's annoying and wonderful at the same time. I really do love it." I couldn't have said it better... with that said, here are some shots I took the past 2 weeks.

Universally PUMPED

For those who know me know that I've been a fan of 311 for a long time and i've been lucky to work with them on a professional level. A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by management to shoot some photos of 311 for their upcoming album and I jumped at the opportunity. Today Nick Hexum, lead singer for 311, went on the radio to debut a new song called "Sunset in July" on 106.7 KROQ here in Los Angeles and to celebrate I am posting some photos of the shoot that day. Thanks to the guys at The Cube and Lasonic for helping out that day!

I think we've all used a film camera before... right? I remember buying Advantix disposable cameras and shooting special events like school dances, incriminating scout camp activities, and concerts. It seemed that i had a camera with me at all times and it really was a lot of work to shoot with a film camera. you'd have to drive to the store drop off your film wait an hour or a whole day to get them back then you'd have to shuffle through 24 photos to see which photos actually came out. With digital photography the possibilities are endless when it comes to editing but then you can rely too much on the post processing that you can never really develop the technique because photoshop is the net. I'm not a DSLR elitist or a film elitist because my love for photography took off right as digital cameras were becoming more affordable and film cameras were just on their way out. This guy on the other hand shoots strictly film. respect.

Yeasayer at The Henry Fonda Theatre 05.24.2011

Saw Yeasayer at The Henry Fonda Theatre last night and it was Night 2 of a 2 night stay and it was packed with eager fans. I saw Yeasayer last year at the Hollywood Bowl opening up for Baba Maal and they had a great show. This time around they were the headliner in a much smaller venue, but they still did great. The show was visually stimulating for the spectator and a pain in the arse for photographers... hopefully I did well.

This Train is Bound for Glory!

About a month ago i got an email from GoldenVoice, a local concert promoter here in Southern California, and it read "RailRoad Revival Tour" and the bands that were to play this show were Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Mumford and Sons, and Old Crow Medicine show. I wasn't too familiar with Old Crow, but the first two bands mentioned were solid, so I knew I had to check this out! So I put in a call to a friend of mine and got a photo credentials set up for the show. The unique thing about this tour is all of the 3 bands playing would travel to each show in vintage train cars, so the locations of the shows were limited to areas that have railroads and this tour is only traveling through the Southwestern United States and ending In New Orleans, LA.

The Southern California date was in Port O' Call, San Pedro in a parking lot located right by the ocean. It was a perfect place to see these 3 bands.
First up was Old Crow Medicine Show

Old Crow really changed my opinion of them. They did a great job with their brand of twangy folk rock.

The Grand FINALE! All 3 bands singing Woody Guthrie's "This Train is Bound for Glory".

What a perfect ending to a great night. It was good to see the camaraderie between all 3 bands on stage, showing everyone that music isn't about ego or popularity, it's about getting on stage and performing your heart out with people you love, doing what you love. Thank RailRoad Revival for driving that point home!

CHASING THE STONE FOX(ES) KINGS

Anytime I have the chance to see Chasing Kings, I take it. For those of you know me know that when I like something I LIKE it and i really really enjoy The Chasing Kings. So last Tuesday they played The Satellite, formerly known as Spaceland, in Silverlake. The set was great, and people definitely liked what they heard. You can check them out here

A Day Full of GHOSTS

Today was a day full of ghosts...
I woke up and immediately started listening to GHOSTFACE KILLAH. (Don't click the link if you're not a fan of hip-hop)
Then I started listening to some GHOSTWOLF tracks that Doug, Evan and Ryan have given me in the past couple months. A lot of really cool tracks that you guys are going to love.

Yesterday Was A Good Day

Yesterday was sort of a LONG day. But there's no better way to make it last longer than to photograph it... right?
Evan, one half of EXES of EVIL, just flew in from Chile where he was working for 311 on a couple South American dates which also included Lollapalooza Chile. We had lunch at Hinano Cafe in Venice then hit up the Pinkberry before he had to jet (literally) back to Omaha.

I keep coming back to this spot in Lincoln Heights whenever I want to a macro view of DTLA and it never gets old. I shot EYES LIPS EYES on this hilltop last March, and I shot scenes from my first music video there too. Overall it's a just great place to visit when you need to clear your mind...

Chasing the EYES LIPS EYES Kings

It's Monday and i'm driving in a van with EYES LIPS EYES heading back to Los Angeles, CA. I'm riding co-pilot while my man Thomas Carroll is manning this ship… This Utah trip was great. It's always good to get out of my element and experience something new, even though Utah was my destination and i've been here many times before.
I was flown up to Utah by a client to shoot their wedding at the LDS temple in Manti, Utah and even though this trip was mostly business, I managed to visit a couple of friends and see EYES LIPS EYES and Chasing Kings at Velour Music Gallery.
These two bands are absolutely talented. I've said this before and I'll say it again… I am so blessed to have talented friends.

Days 19 and 20 - Last Day in Chiang Mai and KL, Malaysia

Day 19 - Last Day in Chiang Mai
On the hunt for a "vintage" clothing spot, but ended up finding a dilapidated building with some graffiti.

Found a used clothing spot that sold a ton of shoes. Here's a shot of one wall lined with shoes.

Day 20 - KL, Malaysia
On the 20th Day we woke up early and took a ride to the Chiang Mai airport to catch a flight to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After landing in Malaysia and an hour bus ride from the LCCT (Low Cost Carrier Terminal) we finally arrived in KL. I'd show you the photos of the hostel we stayed in, but i'm guessing some of you have already had breakfast or about to eat lunch and i wouldn't want you to lose your appetite.

Los Growlers at The Glasshouse Pomona

The Growlers... Where do I start?
Imagine if The Ventures and The Doors went to the high school prom together and after a heated night of passion The Ventures found themselves with child and 9 months later birthed a Gothic Surf band called The Growlers. Can you picture that? The Growlers are the chaos point where surf rock and psychedelic music come together in perfect harmony. It's certainly a breath of fresh air to hear and see a band as creative and uninhibited as The Growlers grow in popularity without a big radio presence. The Growlers' music speaks for itself and it was evidence by the sold out show at the Glasshouse last night.
The first time I saw The Growlers was back in December 2008 at the 3 Clubs in Hollywood when they opened up for The Ferocious Few. I showed up early and was completely blown away by how this slow tempo'd gothic surf rock was causing me to move around and shuffle my feet like i was guest star in a Gidget episode. I hadn't seen them since that December night in 2008 but they proved that they were only getting better as time went on. Last night I found myself dancing in the photo pit enjoying the show just as much, if not more, than everyone in the audience. Check out the photos below listening to the song posted below. I hope you get to see them live one day, cause they'll make you dance too.

LA Art Walk

Every 2nd Thursday of each month DTLA has an art walk where most of the galleries stay open late and the citizens of LA come out and, well.. walk around. It's great to see these city streets full of people who normally wouldn't come down to DTLA at night because, let's be honest, DTLA isn't lively as NYC or Chi-Town, but it is for one night a month.
There was a lot of cool and interesting art that I'm not going to post because YOU should head down there yourself and experience it first hand...
Instead i'll show you evidence that people actually do walk in LA.
I never get tired of taking pictures of The Alexandria Hotel.

The Cube: Where Cool People are Made

If you know me, then you know what The Cube is. The Cube is a creative space in the form of 2 lofts occupied by EYES LIPS EYES and Toy Bombs. These two bands moved from Utah to California to leave their mark on the local music scene and have been successful at it. I had the opportunity to tour with these two bands in October of 2010 and it was a glorious time. New friendships were made, and amazing memories... but i digress.
The Cube is a hang out where different artistic mediums take shape. Amanda paints, Tony Hello films and edits videos, Aaron records and masters music, Thomas uses photoshop to express his art in creating gig flyers, and Cole, Brandon, Gardner, Thomas, Spencer, Tony Hello, Ryan Darton aka RSD, and Aaron express themselves musically. Before The Cube was a work/live loft, it was a venue where bands played. LCD Soundsystem actually played a show there once, but it was made into lofts soon after. The Cube was home to Gunnstock where Bastard Lovechild of Rock n Roll, Toy Bombs, and EYES LIPS EYES played to celebrate Amanda's 22nd bday. It was a great night full of music and dancing inspired by CORPSEWALL's excellent choice of music. This inspired everyone to make The Cube a destination for small shows to showcase new talent from LA or anyone passing through. (more on this as details become available.) The Cube is my home away from home. You can often catch me sleeping or editing photos on the couch in EYES LIPS EYES' loft or convincing Spencer to grab some tacos at the local Taco Truck.
Last Tuesday I showed up at The Cube and walked in on Toy Bombs playing one of my favorite songs.

135 km: Pai to Chiang Mai aka Day16 and Days 18 and 19

When we arrived to Pai from Chiang Mai the bus service we took also rented motorbike for local use around the city. It's very easy to see Pai on a motorbike and ride to the serval waterfalls close by or even some of the elephant camps that aren't within walking distance. They also gave you the option of renting the motorbike for a trip back to Chiang Mai for 500 Thai Baht (roughly about 15 American Dollars). From the moment my travel buddy told me about this I couldn't get the idea out of my mind. How great would it be to have a "Motorcycle Diaries" experience, minus the communism, in foreign country. I wanted to take that ride back to Chiang Mai on a Motorbike and have a pseudo Che Guevara experience. So early Friday Morning I woke up and got my stuff ready and I paid the 500 Baht and took off for Chiang Mai. If i hadn't mentioned it already in the previous post, the ride from Chiang Mai to Pai was one winding rode... one that would inspire Sheryl Crow to write enough songs to make 2 albums. The ride was great. Funny how much thinking you can do while riding a motorbike 100km/h (roughly 60 mph) on a straight away and bobbing and weaving through traffic. It was a great experience. I could go on for hours about this solo excursion, but I'll let you look at the photos instead.

I arrived in Chiang Mai after 5 hours of travel. I stopped a lot to check out the view, offer a Buddhist Monk a ride, rest, and get gas. There was this sense of peace traveling through the mountains of Thailand on a motorbike. Feeling the wind and sun on my face. The Arcade Fire's Song "The Suburbs Continued" kept playing in my head long after I took my earphones off... My ride was a cathartic experience. Don't try and synthesis too much out of that. It's amazing how much you think about when you're on your own. My mind and body were exhausted that once i got got a guest house in Chiang Mai I fell asleep for close to 10 hours. And those how know me know that i never get more than 5 hours of sleep a night on a good day.

Day 17 and 18 - Jungle Flight was so much fun i did it twice.

Check out dude's glasses. Half rounded and half square frame. This guys was an interesting cat... very smart and actually had learned Thai very quickly. From what his gal pal told us, he seems to catch on foreign languages fairly quickly. He credits it to knowing several computer languages and asking questions about other languages like "How many alphabets does the Korean language have?" about a million times. Aside from his repetitious questions, he seemed like a cool cat... and a good dancer.

Days 12-15: Chiang Mai and Pai

Day 12 - Train Ride to Chiang Mai
After only one day in Ayutthaya, we took a train to the northern city of Chiang Mai. We were well aware that the train was slow as molasses and it would take about 12 hours of travel to get to Chiang Mai, but we decided to bite the bullet and take this journey up north.
Want the full experience of this train ride? Stare at this photo below for about 12 hours, have someone sit next to you and sing random Pearl Jam songs and 90's grunge hits mixed in with some Enrique Iglesias and other Top 40 hits. Don't forget to add the 2 meals comprised of 90% rice and 10% meat.

After a 12 hour train ride we finally arrived in Chiang Mai at 9pm. Upon our we were immediately approached by Tuk Tuk drivers soliciting their services, but were still trying to orient ourselves as to where we need to go. As we walked towards the main road, a very small man with a hunchback (i wish i was making this up) emerged from the shadows. With one hand placed on his chest and the other one directing us towards his Tuk Tuk, this hunchback of Chiang Mai stole our hearts. We took the ride and he took us to our guest house. We never saw the Hunchback of Chiang Mai again, but his adorable selling tactics worked on us. The two photos below are of the only photos i have of the Hunchback of Chiang Mai. He does exist and consider yourself lucky if he ever gives you a ride.

Our next stop on this trip was the city of Pai. One has to take small bus 3 hours to get to Pai and 2.5 hours of that trip is spent traveling uphill on winding roads to prevent motion sickness... the payoff was this.

Day 11 - Ayutthaya

Sunday we left Bangkok for Ayutthaya.

Once we checked into the Baan Lotus Guest House we immediately set up a Tuk Tuk tour of this ancient city. In contrast to Bangkok's colorful buildings and temples, Ayutthaya show's it's age with it's old brick wats (temples) and buddha statues. Ayutthaya is small and can be explored by bike if you're into sweating bullets and accustomed to swatting mosquitos while riding a bike. ha!

Thailand Trip Days 9 and 10

Day 9 - Visting Wat Pho, Temple of the Reclining Buddha.

As we were walking through the alley ways of Chinatown we ran caught a glimpse of the river through this long walk way... we took a small detour and walked to the riverside to watch the horizon swallow the sun... it was one of the more peaceful moments of my trip.

The Lonely Planet mentioned there was a Beatles cover band called "The Thai Beatles" that play at an Irish Pub every Friday night and I knew i had to see this. The Thai Beatles didn't cover Beatles songs in Thai it was a full on Coverband. They dressed, played and even spoke like The Beatles. The Thai John Lennon version even spoke like him and had his signature glasses. I think he may have been wearing a wig. ha! Here are some photos.

Day 10 - Chatuchak Weekend Market
This market was absolutely insane. If you've never suffered from claustrophobia, you'll definitely catch it walking the isles of this massive pentagon shaped death trap of commerce. Make sure you're hydrated and have red ruby shoes to click the heels of WHEN you get lost. ;-)

Thailand Trip Day 8

I'm sure you guys have been waiting on the edges of your seats for me to post these photos... right?
Right.
Well after a long 8 hour ride from Ranong to Bangkok (BKK), we finally arrived at the BKK bus terminal at 5 in the morning. Yup 5 in the morning. We then took a local bus to Silom to find our hostel, and after we settled in and took a much needed shower we hit the streets of BKK.

There's a wide variety of transportation options in BKK. There's the Tuk Tuk (perfect if you want to increase your chances of lung cancer), taxi cab, bus, monorail, subway and boatbus. Since BKK is situated along the Chao Phraya River, the boat bus is a sometimes the fastest option to the get to northern part of the city. Sitting on those boats reminded me so much of Venice riding up and down the Grand Canal passing Ponte Rialto on my way to St. Marks... (blank stare). BACK TO THE PHOTOS!

Day 5, 6, 7: Koh Phayam and Ranong

Day 5: Koh Phayam
This is the only shot i took on Day 5 on the island of Koh Phayam. There was a lot of walking involved that day and we broke down and rented a motorbike. I didn't want to carry my camera around since this was my first time on a motorbike and i was still adjusting to riding on the opposite side of the road, so i left my camera behind.

Day 6: The hunt for the Sea Gypsy Settlement on the Island of Koh Phayam
According to the Thailand addition of Lonely Planet there are sea gypsy settlements in the northern eastern area of the Island of Koh Phayam. So we rode our motorbike till the road ended and we began our search and this is what we found.

Hello Kitty is transcendant... she penetrates everyone's hearts, even sea gypsies. ;-)

As you can tell by photos above, we didn't find anything but beautiful beaches and blue water. We did find remains of where a settlement once was but we didn't see any actual gypsies. Maybe it was for the best... chissa'?
Day 7: Last day in Koh Phayam and Ranong
Our last day in Koh Phayam was spend having breakfast and laying on the beach reading. Then we had to run to the pier and catch the slow boat back to Ranong.
Here are some shots from that boat ride.

The boat we took could not go all the way into the docking area because of the low tide, so we docked where we could and took a ride on the back of a truck to Ranong's town center. We needed to get back to Ranong to catch a bus 8 hours to Bangkok, but we got into Ranong 5 hours early so we had time to kill. Here is Ranong.

"With my lightning bolts a-glowin'..."

I love the band Arcade Fire.
There really isn't more i can say about it. There's this connection I have with their music and I can't help but feel overwhelmed with a flurry of emotions whenever I listen to it. I first saw them in 2005 at KROQ's Inland Invasion, then in 2007 at the Greek Theatre and Hollywood Bowl in support of their album Neon Bible, and twice last year at The Shrine Auditorium.
I was lucky enough to score entry to a secret show Arcade Fire had at The Ukrainian Cultural Arts Center off the 101 Freeway and Melrose. I waited in line 10 hours at the El Rey Theatre off Wilshire to be one of the 600 people that to gain entrance. You can also read more about this on The Hundreds website.
(side note: I wrote a very long entry that was about 4 paragraphs long... decided not to post it. but if you're interested email me and i'll send it to you. ;-))

Here's a shot of the line at the El Rey and the local entertainment... this dude said "i'm here to entertain you!". He really was here for us because he WOULD NOT LEAVE.

10 hours in a line for tickets and the 9 hours of anticipation was well worth the wait. then around 9pm Friday night Arcade Fire hit the stage and proceeded to blow our minds away...

That last picture is not the best picture of the show... but it accurately represents the daze I was in after the show. The show was by far one of the most amazing shows I've seen. If you missed out, here's a little video I made... you can also find it here on The Los Angeles Times website. (yeah i'm rubbing it in just a bit)

updated: Congrats to The Arcade Fire for winning Album of the Year for the record "The Suburbs". Knowing that an album that I've been listening to non stop since it came out won Album of the year makes me me feel like I won the grammy too! Day 4: Koh Phayam

After a night in Koh Chang, we took the slow boat once again back to Ranong to take another boat to the island of Koh Phayam. A lot of boat travel and a lot of sun but we weren't complaining.

We finally made it to the island of Koh Phayam after a brief ride on the speedboat from Ranong. Koh Phayam is relatively more touristy than the island of Koh Chang. Koh Phayam had small paved roads for the motorbikes, restaurants and internet.

Day 3: KL, Phuket, Ranong, Koh Chang

I started this 3 week long trip on January 13th, 2011. I flew China Eastern from Los Angeles to Shanghai, China. From Shanghai I took another flight to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I left on a thursday and got to KL Saturday midnight. When are they going to invent teleportation? I thought Jeff Goldblum had perfected the art of teleportation back in the 80's movie "The Fly"... In any case, I met up with my travel товарищ at Kuala Lumpur's Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) and we caught a flight to Phuket, Thailand.

This is my first shot in Thailand and it's the baggage claim in Phuket... Muy lame.

Upon our arrival to Phuket we took a bus ride 5 hours north up the Andaman coast to Ranong.

Luckily we stopped along the way for a small break.

Once we got to Ranong we had to hustle to the dock where we were supposed to catch a boat to the island of Koh Phayam...

but all the tickets for the speedboat were sold out by the time we got there, so we decided to go to the island of Koh Chang for the night. So it took us about an hour to get out there.

This is was what I was facing...

and this is what was behind me.

The boat finally dropped us off on the island of Koh Chang. Since there was no dock for the boat, we pulled up close to the shore without hitting it and we got out. People were there to carry our bags to dry land to Cashew Resort where our bungalow awaited.

Then it was time to relax on the beach.

total cost for one night at Cashew was a little under $10.00. Food included. Ha!

21st Day

I've been away for 3 weeks.
I arrived at LAX yesterday after being in Thailand for 3 weeks with a brief stop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
During this trip i traveled by plane, boat, bus, motorbike, taxi, water taxi, subway, monorail, tuk tuk, train, zip line, magic carpet, and unicorn. And I have over 1,000 photos and knots in my back as evidence.

These are the last photos i took of the trip. These photos are of KL, Malaysia, KL International Airport, and Shanghai China.
I don't know why I'm showing you the last couple of photos i took... perhaps it's because they are the freshest in my mind right now. I see these photos and the memories take shape... a tangible quality that I can still touch.
This is my 21st day.

OMEGA and ALPHA

Salt Lake City was my destination for this year's New Year's Eve celebration. I saw my family for a bit and then headed down to downtown Salt Lake City to see my friends Toy Bombs and EYES LIPS EYES perform.
I'm notorious for not getting "the memo"... and the memo this New Year's Eve was that the temperature was going to be in the single digits. Yes i did wear a coat, but only wore one pair of socks and one pair of pants. It was so cold i was tempted put my hands in the fire to warm up.
Despite how cold it was, Toy Bombs and EYES LIPS EYS brought the noise. And by noise i mean the jams. And by jams i mean well written music.

2010: A Year in Review

This is my last blog post for 2010 and it's a blog post without a photo in it. The video below is a video representation of this year... The year 2010.

2010 was amazing and it was full of travel and new friendships, but more importantly 2010 was spent reinforcing relationships with people I love. Do I regret things I did or didn't do in 2010? Yes I do... But those regrets are dwarfed by all the amazing experiences I had this this year and 2011 is already looking very promising.

The storm finally stopped...

and finally my directorial debut. I shot and directed the music video for EYES LIPS EYES' song Bear Trap last week. It stars Matt Heder and Tejah Signori. These two were great to work with and very patient with me on my first ever music video shoot. Thanks to Melanie Warner, Catherine Card, and Haylie Hoopes for helping me out last minute. Also Will Kindrick was helpful, even with his busy schedule, doing some special effects. and lastly i would like to thank EYES LIPS EYES for giving me this opportunity to shoot this video. i hop you enjoy it!

The {Week} END

The weekend is typically a span of time when you can relax and get things done that you didn't have time to do during the week. My weekend started January 8, 2010 and it's still going... but that's a complicated blog post for another day.
Back to the subject at hand... the weekend. yeah... this weekend was slightly busy.
On Friday I went to a holiday party at church, a birthday party at a karaoke bar.
Most of Saturday was spent sitting at home watching anything remotely interesting on HBO and The Sundance Channel. These Southern California rain storms are making it difficult to mobilize and get stuff done. I guess I'll let it slide since this is probably the only rain we'll get in a long time.

Saturday night I headed over to Art Center's Grad Show to support my friend Derek Wong. Derek just completed his schooling in Graphic Design and is heading over to New York before the year's end to start a new gig... so I needed to catch him before he left.
Derek's twin brother Kyle Wong, who is also moving to New York, is a photographer. Kyle's photography is amazing. His photography always has some meaning behind it... sometimes i don't know what that meaning is, but i know his photos aren't just superficial. Wanna enrich your lives for a bit? Sunday I went to church then immediately after made a b-line to Mummy Space Island Productions Headquarters, aka Will Kindrick's house, to get help on some special effects for a music video i shot and directed last week for Eyes lips Eyes.
Will's been busy working on a webisode called "Dead Grandma, which is a throw back to 1950’s-60’s sitcoms about a grandma who comes back from the dead to haunt her grandson Andy, played by Matt Heder, with unwanted love and life advice. I've seen a couple episodes and they are hilarious. Bookmark Will's blog or "Like" the Dead Grandma Facebook page for further updates on this project.

Sunday Lazy Sunday

Sundays are always good to me. I usually make the trek from Covina to Glendale to attend choych with good people. The commute is roughly 40 minutes, which is spend listening to The Moth Hour.
This past sunday was spent going to church then heading down to DTLA to meet up with my buddy Douglas and Evan to check out a vinyl swap meet. I got to DTLA a little early and discovered that The Renegade Craft Fair was going on so i stopped by to check it out.

READY... SET... STOP!

Today I make my directorial debut. My friends in Eyes Lips Eyes have trusted me with the responsibility of making a music video for their song Bear Trap that was released last tuesday. The offer came while we were on tour and Tony Hello was stoked on me doing a stop action video for them. I'm pretty excited and also nervous to take on this task head on (cliche' alert).

So while i get this work underway, here's some stop action i've done that you can chew on until i release the Bear Trap video later this month.

CELL OUT Part 1

With cellphone technology advancing and developers given the tools to make different photo applications, the point and shoot camera has almost been replaced by iPhones, Blackberrys, and Androids. Although these cellphone produced images look great on small screens, the quality is sub par if you decide to print them out. As one who loves photography and taking photos, it bothers me that people are aren't using higher resolution cameras to capture these important moments. This bothered me so much I had a venting session with a friend talking about this very subject... then later that day i hooked my iphone up to my computer and saw this...

8GBs of PHOTOS?!? I felt like an idiot. Here i was on my high horse and in the end i was guilty of taking too many photos on my cellphone. but it goes without saying that cellphones has made it easier to communicate with everyone else and they have made it easier for people to share photos and videos. And with social media penetrating our everyday life style, the cellphone makes it easy for us to share with large group of people with minimal effort.

Utah + My Mom = Happy Marcello

It's been a week since i've been back from Utah, but it feels like it's been several months. For those of you just tuning in to my blog... i was on a massive coast to coast road trip with my friends in EYES LIPS EYES and Toy Bombs. i came home for a week then headed out to Utah for a week to be with the family...

The weather was so sweet for a second i contemplated moving there.

For those who are friends with me on facebook or twitter probably know who the cutie below is...
If not, this is Cruz.

I usually stay with my sister in Farmington when i'm in Utah... she lives at the end of a culdesac which means her backyard is massive.

Enough room for my niece and nephews to run around.
here's Jacob, Jordan, and Jason. (yeah... it's hard to keep these names straight sometimes when i'm calling for them.)

Went to a Real Salt Lake football match with Melissa and Steve.

So the week I spent in Utah was great. There's no other word to describe the time i had with my family. the last time i went my mother wasn't there because she was in Mexico for my grandmother's funeral, and i was in town for less than 24 hours. So there wasn't enough time for me to really visit. I just showered and headed over to Salt Lake to shoot a show and left for Boulder, CO the very next morning.
The main reason for my visit to Utah was to spend a whole week with my mom before she left to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. My mom was called to serve as missionary in Santiago Chile for 18 months. Not many of you know who my mother is, nor will you ever have the chance to meet her but she's a special soul. Without giving you ALL my family's history, the one word that would best describe my mother is: "Sacrifice". It was a huge sacrifice for my mom to raise my sisters and me by herself. When my oldest sister had her last child, my mom retired from her job early and left California to take care of my nephew Jason when he was just months old. So it's not out of character for my mother to leave her family, friends, and home of the past 6 years to go serve a mission in Santiago, Chile. I know each of your mother's are special so let her know if you don't already. My mom is pretty amazing and i know it's cliche to say it, but a lot of who I am today was directly influenced by my mother's sacrifice. I wish you could all meet my mom... She'd probably make you the best breakfast you'll ever have.

Toy Bombs and EYES LIPS EYES: The only candy I ate for Halloween

Halloween... yeah. I've never been a big fan or really dressed up for the occasion but this year i devoted a whole month to my costume. i kinda grew a beard... so the most logical person i could be was Joaquin Phoenix... right?

This Halloween i went to see the last JUST FRIENDS TOUR date. It awesome seeing this tour come to a close in Long Beach California. Toy Bombs and Eyes Lips Eyes played at the Queen Mary for their yearly haunted house/boat/house/dome thing.They had "haunted" mazes that we explored after their sets. I wasn't THAT scared going through the mazes, but i would still like to apologize to the people who's feet I stepped on trying to avoid those zombies hidden behind corners.

It was a surprise to run into Nate. Nate hired me to shoot his wedding in Cancun in March... man it was good to see him.

Saturday October 16, 2010 marks the day I finally visited the fair city of Chicago. I've only seen Chicago through the magic of television and with the help of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Perfect Strangers , Adventure of Babysitting, Family Matters, Married with Children, and the list goes on. As soon as we got out of the tour van, i took out my camera and started shooting and made this stop action video...

It seems like we were in Minneapolis a month ago but it was less than a week ago... Traveling has been wearing me out a bit, but each city and has been reenergizing me and giving me more to look at and more to shoot. i have to admit that i am losing track of the days... but my cell phone and computer keep reminding me of the date and time... so i got it covered.
before i go on taking you an a literary journey of what my scatterbrain is thinking, i better just quit typing and just let you see what happened.

Minneapolis was a pretty cool town. For some reason i never give these towns the benefit of the doubt, and each city we visit always proves me wrong. I'm glad i'm visiting these areas and discovering that there are cooler towns other than LA, NYC, and DC.

CONEMN - Colorado to Nebraska to Minnesota

Colorado was a blast, but the only thing keeping us from staying a couple more hours on Thursday was the 100 hour drive (really felt like that) drive to Omaha, Nebraska. I'll save you the trouble of driving from Boulder to Omaha to Minneapolis and just show you these photos.

Tour Day 2

After a good turn out in Salt Lake City, we headed out to Boulder Colorado. The drive was nearly 8 hours, full of pit stops and snack attacks. I think Richard Simmons would explode if he saw the type of food we ate.

Apparently Wyoming is the home of the Jackalope, so they had a ton of novelty gifts featuring it. And all this time i thought Uncle Joey of Full House was messing with us...

The amount of talent these dudes have is sickening... Evan just finished his new album under the moniker Metameta called "Pink Moment". Ryan just finished a tour playing guitar for an up and coming artist named Vita Chambers who opened up for Justin Bieber all summer along.
Friday and Saturday i was there to see them record a new song for the newExes of Evil album.

I'll be honest... the only reason why i know it's Monday is because my friend, who i'm staying with in DC, has to work. The days blend together, thoughts wander, and the perpetual tired eyes probably give off the vibe that i'm high on drugs. (trust me, i'm not.)

If you know me, you know that i love visiting New York City. New York City, in particular Brooklyn, has been like a second home to me this past year and knowing great people that live here makes the it harder to leave...
Photographing New York never gets old, there's so much to see and so many things that constantly change that it gives me endless things to shoot. In the past i've given people a macro view of New York, but i neglect to show the small details that make New York one of the greatest cities in this world... hope you like this batch... more to come.

311 Rocks Red Rocks

I don't care what time of music you're into, but to say that 311 is not relevant today is an outrageous statement. 311 has been touring non stop for the past 20 years and have been surprising critics left and right with their musicianship, but more importantly their dedication to their fan base. I had the privilege of flying to Denver, CO to see one of the best bands perform in front of thousands of eager fans, who waited in line 12 hours to have a front row seat. 311 brought it... and no one left that place disappointed.

This past year has definitely been one of the most interesting years of my life. For those who have been following my facebook/twitter updates know that I've been a bit of an urban gypsy. Flights to New York, DC, Cancun, Las Vegas, sprinkled with small trips to Ojai. I'm not saying any of this to brag, but really it's a reality check as to how blessed i've been this past year. i have nothing to complain about... i've been extremely blessed.

It all started about a year when i flew out to NYC to shoot 311. My friend Ryan Siegel was nice enough to let me crash on his couch and let me come and go as i pleased. I ran around the city getting lost (which i actually still do despite having an iphone), seeing the sites and doing all the things a tourist do. I even went up to Boston for a couple hours... (that's a blog post in and of itself).

The thing i loved most about this first trip was the friendships i made. Ryan and I were friends, but i left knowing that i had a brother in another state... We were both going through similar situations in our personal life and we bonded. Then there was Francesco and Evelyn... two good people. Nothing more, nothing less. It's refreshing to be around people that have good energy.

Ojai

Last week i went to Ojai for an overnight trip with my buddy Troy. We visited our buddy Doug and his little family. It was nice of them to let us hang out and enjoy the serenity that Ojai seems to have an abundance of.

Before we went exploring, Doug showed me this below painting he just got earlier in the week. The painting was done by Eloy Torrez, a Los Angeles Based artist mostly known for the murals he's done all around LA. Here is a trailer of a documentary they're doing on Eloy. CLICK HERE.

Troy with Pablo or PLOPS or FLAVLOW

Pablo recently lost his partner in crime Irie. They were friends for 12 years and when we got to his house you can tell that Pablo wasn't himself and the depression was setting in. Our visit definitely picked his spirits up a bit.

LA Art Walk

On every 2nd Thursday of the month DTLA (DownTown LA) hosts LA Art Walk . Art galleries are kept open late so people can come and admire the LA Art Scene. The streets of LA were saturated with people, gourmet food trucks, but most importantly saturated with ART. This is what i saw! Thanks to Hillary and Marissa that took the trek to DTLA with me.

EXES of EVIL Day in Brooklyn.
Mark May 6, 2010 as the day that the EXES of EVIL completed their debut album "LOVE". I've been working with Ryan and Evan for a couple months now doing photography, album artwork, and being an objective ear to their musical creations. I've listened to this album a couple times and i'm confident that a larger group of people will be able to hear this and fall in love with it as i have.

So this post will be dedicated to some of the photos i've taken of the guys in Ojai, CA and Brooklyn, NY.

Rosie + Nate in CANCUN!

CA to UT and Back

Took a quick road trip with my friend Jeremy and Ann up to Utah this past weekend. Jeremy had a show at Sammy's Cafe and our church had General Conference which is where all the leaders of the church address the church as a whole and give inspirational messages. I thought it would be a great opportunity to go up and be uplifted (i was listening to conference even if it looked like i was sleeping... Jeremy and Ann!!) and also see my family. It was great cause i got to see some cousins that i hadn't seen in a long time and i got to see my nephew Cruz who just turned 1 year old. Time flies and so did the time i spent with them this weekend.

SONIC BOOM!

The great thing about photography is there are so many different kinds that if you don't like concert and band photography like I do, there's nature, fashion, product and architecture. Click here for a full list.

i recently had the opportunity to see a local fashion photographer Sonic work his magic. He had his shoot in the garage of his house and i was just a fly on a wall trying to pick up some pointers. I'll admit that fashion photography isn't my thing but i really have a great appreciation for it. There are so many pieces to the puzzle. You have a photographer, model, makeup artist, stylist, sometimes a location scout and things can get a bit stressful. Sonic gave me an inside look on how things are done. This was my view from the shoot.

I've been a long time fan of 311, not as long as some, but a big fan nonetheless.

311 has a 3-11 Day celebration every two years where they play a 5 hour set a million songs and throw some circus acts in between sets. i was lucky to have photo privileges throughout the show and this is what i saw...

Cancun - Day 1

Many of you might know this already, but I'm in Cancun, Mexico right now. I flew in Thursday afternoon. I'm here to shoot a wedding for Nate and Rosie. A couple that I have never met in my life until last night. I have Jennifer Miller to thank for this opportunity.

Friday i took some time to head down to the beach in Cancun before i had to go to Playa del Carmen.

EXES OF EVIL Photo shoot

I consider myself to be very blessed in many ways than one. I have a family that loves me, people around me that push me creatively and experiences that have made my life very sweet.

Today i find myself in Ojai, California where i met Ryan and Evan who are the genuises behind this new music project called EXES OF EVIL. I met Ryan years ago when he was the frontman for The Rivalry and I met Evan back when he started touring with 311 as a production assistant. Both guys are great people and extremely musically talented and when they asked to me shoot some promo shots for them i jumped at the opportunity. we shot around and this is what we came up...

I've been in Las Vegas the past couple of days attending and shooting 311 for their 3-11 Day Celebration.
It was definitely a whirlwind of craziness that i'm still recovering from. I took roughly 20 gigabytes worth of photos and my heart starts racing just thinking about the task i have ahead of me.

We had a Piadina. The Piadina is a culinary staple of Rimini, Italy. Rimini was the very first city I lived in back in 2000. After we walked around a little bit in the snow.

New York City - Day 1

This post is 3 weeks too late.
Since i have extra time on my hands i thought i would take a trip to New York.
This is my first full day.
New York Day 1. February 14, 2010.

Bryant Park was crawling with good looking people. Amy, Culture Maven at .Hoot. got some good photos of what people were wearing at New York's Fashion Week.

P is for Pasadena

When i'm not home I spend most of my time in the City of Pasadena. Besides the obvious reason i.e. Zankou and their yummy garlic paste, i have friends that live there. Troybeast, Smelly and MY all reside in the City of Roses. The thing I love most about this city is that you can bike around the city. Besides commuting to work there really is no need to have a car. Everything you need is within biking distance. If you want to go to Hollywood you can just hop on the Gold Line to Union Station and take the Redline up to Hollywood.

From time to time I get some visitors here at my place in Covina, CA. If you don't know where Covina, CA is just watch "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure". It's close by where the movie takes place. I'm starting to think that the only purpose that movie had was to put San Dimas on the map and serve as a geographical reference point to anyone who doesn't know where Covina is. But i digress...

My buddy Gus came by to help me design a logo for my photography, but it quickly turned into lunch/viewing party of the US vs. Netherlands soccer game. I met Gus and his twin brother Javier back in high school and we've been good friends since. He's probably one of my most creative friends i have and recently decided to pursue art full time and designing my photography logo is his first task.

Then my good friend Kelly aka Kaybu aka KB aka Bish stopped by. Kelly just came back from living in London, England for about 5 months. She's been back a little over a week now and adjusting to not knowing what time it is since we don't have a Big Ben here in LA.

The day ended with Midlake at The El Rey. They played a great set playing songs from "The Trails of Von Occupanther" and their newly released album "The Courage of Others". Thanks to Emily, Sasha, and Tony for being my +3.

After going to Almost Acoustic Xmas last night here in Los Angeles it reminded me how much i love seeing bands perform. but really do i need that reminder? i go to shows all the time... tonight for instance i am going to see MEW at the Henry Fonda. So i just went and took a look at my flickr account and pulled out some of my favorite live shots...
